FRIDAY BOARD BULLETIN 3/5/18

Board Members:

We come to the end of a watershed week in our district and have done some pretty heavy lifting that undoubtedly will improve our school district for the future!

On Tuesday we hosted a large group of community stakeholders for a discussion on the future of Hudson Schools. Moderated by our architect, we spend time discussing and reviewing the results of the survey that was recently completed. It was very exciting to see the ideas and energy of this group! Our architect left with some great ideas and we are looking forward to our next small group meeting between administrators and architects, scheduled for the end of the month.

All scoring material for Food Service Management was also due this week; at this time all scores have been submitted and the final tabulations are finished. I look forward to meeting with the scoring committee on Monday afternoon to make our final recommendation.

In the legislature this week, SSA was set and approved by both Houses and is on its way to the governor where we expect it will be signed. The bill to overrule the recommendations of two separate special committees and establish the Iowa Assessments as the state assessment continues to move through the legislature, despite the disapproval of the majority of education stakeholders. They also moved forward with a requirement that students pass a civics exam as a requirement for graduation.

The biggest news of the week, while not tied directly to schools was the Senate’s passage of a tax reform bill. As passed, the tax reform bill would reduce revenue by over $1 billion a year. Considering the fact that the current state budget is about $7 billion that should raise a few eyebrows. It should also be noted the largest line item in the state budget: education. Stay tuned, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

7-12 band pops concert

My picture this week is from the 7-12 band pops concert on Tuesday evening where we were treated to performances from both the high school and junior high school bands. If you are looking for something fun to do tomorrow, our high school jazz band will compete in the NEIBA jazz competition right here in Hudson. Our jazz band is scheduled to perform at 11:15. And of course, next Thursday at 7:00 p.m. is the annual ‘Pack the Gym’ performance that will include both the jazz bands and show choirs!

Have a great weekend!
