The Hudson High School Large Group Speech team has received two all state nominations following the State Speech Contest, held at Union High School on February 8th. Hudson students performed in the categories of Readers Theater and Musical Theater for three adjudicators and received Division I ratings, the highest rating possible. Appearing at the All State Festival is the highest honor that speech students can receive, requiring nomination from at least two of the three judges. The students involved are:
"Into the Woods," Musical Theater - Levi Budreau, Ashlyn Reynolds, Olivia Jursik, Zariah Strong, Kami Koelling, Izzy Jorgensen, Brody King
"The Young and the Senseless: a Tale of Utter Stupidity," Readers Theater - Levi Budreau, Ashlyn Reynolds, Olivia Jursik, Kami Koelling, Izzy Jorgensen, Mackenzie Christopher, Jacob Herring, Dylan Steimel
The Hudson Speech team worked diligently to prepare two titles for district and state contests amidst a year of COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Students wore face coverings and performed at contests that were scaled back in size. In a normal year, the Speech team would have traveled to Cascade for district contest in January and Decorah for state contest. Instead, Speech teams all around the state were given the option to host their own smaller contests with local schools. The All State Speech Festival would typically take place on the third Saturday of February, with all state entries from around the state performing for a guest judge. This year's festival has been cancelled due to concerns over COVID-19, but the honor for Hudson's entries is no less significant.
Now in its third year of existence, Hudson's Large Group speech team has consistently received Division I ratings since its first year in 2019. Prior to this, Hudson had not competed at speech contest since 2009. The honor of two all state nominations is a meaningful milestone for the students as they look forward to expanding the program in the years to come.
