Friday Board Bulletin 1/27/2023

Board Members:

Happy Friday! Well, there's no sugar coating it. This was a difficult week for public education in Iowa. As you are aware, the legislature passed and the governor signed the comprehensive school voucher legislation this week. And as I shared with you yesterday, we have already had one family leave for private school. Even though we are all incredibly disappointed, we have to remain optimistic. While I will continue to share the consequences of this legislation and explain to our public the nuances of how this and other policy proposals will impact our district, I remain undeterred. We have a lot of great things going on in our school district that will continue to attract students and families to our schools. Of this I am certain!

While the Senate proposed a 2% increase in SSA for the next fiscal year, I spoke with Derek Wulf yesterday and he is leading efforts on the House side to set it at 3%. He has spoken with the governor and leadership in his chamber, as well as the Senate to push this forward. Keep in mind the governor proposed 2.5% so it is notable his position is contrary to this. While we may disagree with Derek's vote on the voucher bill, at the same time it is important to let him know that we are appreciative of this particular policy proposal. It's still early in the session, and we are in a unique position to have a legislator in the majority whose children are actually enrolled in Hudson Schools.

Ok! Enough legislation for the week! Our RFP for the food service managed services has been submitted for review and just this morning the DE responded with comments. The changes they are recommending are relatively simple so I anticipate a quick turn around and being able to have this issued in the next week. It will be great to get this off my plate!

That's probably enough for one week. I don't need to burden you with any extra reading so have a great weekend. Snow is on the way. Fortunately I won't have to get up early to check roads this time!

Superintendent
