Friday Board Bulletin 9/14/18

Posted Date: 09/14/2018

Board Members:

It has been another great week here in the district! On Monday morning morning I met with Senator Danielson and Dave Williams (House Candidate for District 60) to discuss our district legislative priorities in advance of the board meeting on Monday night. The blog articles discussing our priorities are linked to the agenda. I would recommend reviewing these prior to our Monday evening meeting. (Representative Rogers is scheduled for the October meeting.)

On Wednesday we held our first labor/management collaborative meeting which went well. Yesterday Jeff Bell, Jeff Dieken and I attended an emergency operations workshop sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security and Education. This is in response to a new state law enacted during the last legislative session requiring school districts to develop and implement a high quality emergency plan including contingencies for active shooter. We have been working on our plan for the last couple of years so we feel very good about where our planning is right now.

That brings us to today. Yesterday was the deadline in which electors could file a petition forcing a special election to fill a board vacancy. Since that deadline has passed, at your direction we will appoint Kala Featherstone to fill  that seat. I met with Kala this morning and briefed her on the process and did my best to bring her up to speed so she will be ready to go on Monday evening. I do believe Kala will be an excellent addition to the board and will quickly become a valuable asset to our work on the board. Monday evening will include a very busy agenda, with an organizational meeting that includes a transfer of leadership, the appointment of a new member, and a visit from legislative candidates. Both principals will also be on hand that evening to give you briefings about what is going on in their buildings as we start the school year and to share some information on staffing. I also want to let you know that OPAA! is planning to serve a meal so you have an opportunity to see what all the fuss is about with our new hot lunch program. I think you'll enjoy it! Here is the menu planned for Monday evening:

Board Meeting Dinner Menu
Roasted Beet, Caramelized Goat Cheese, Winter Greens Salad w/ Honey Vinaigrett
Braised Pork, Sautéed Onions & Apple, with Cheddar, Stromboli
Boca Negro, Fresh Berries, and Cream

Student section during volleyball game. USA night!

The photo I am sharing today is from the first home volleyball game of the season, which was held on Tuesday evening. In that game, the Pirates upset the number 5 ranked Sailors in 4 sets. Our student section did a great job of cheering on the team that evening.

Oh, and one other reminder, we will need to take another board photo Monday evening. And Karyn, we will need a couple of pictures with you as well. Have an awesome weekend, I look forward to seeing you Monday!
