Friday Board Bulletin 3/15/2019

Board Members:

It has been a very busy and long week for our educators as they had parent teacher conferences Monday and Tuesday night, finishing with a full day of school today. You will recall today was originally not a day of work for teachers because of conferences but was changed so we could get a makeup day in before spring break. Nevertheless, we are all in good spirits and I know everyone is looking forward to next week!

We have certainly had our share of challenges this week! The county roads are an absolute mess and we have some places we simply can't get to, like Hudson Heights. When Waters road floods, we typically are able to get to that neighborhood by going in the 'back' way. This week that wasn't possible due to the conditions of the roads. Drivers are reporting to me this is the worst condition they can ever remember the roads being in. As a bit of context, our use of hard surface road [routes] is generally done sparingly. This year we have run hard surface roads more than the sum of the last several years combined. Here's to hoping we can dry things out next week!

There were a couple of fun events this week as well, starting with the NICL academic awards banquet at Central Rivers AEA. A new event to the conference last year, we are now honoring the top five members of each graduating class in the conference. Certainly this is a sign the school year will start winding down soon. The second was our jazz band concert last night. Our jazz band is so good! Year after year this group is just such a treat to see perform. Once again, they qualified for the state jazz championships in Des Moines.

This week in the legislature was largely spent on debate in both chambers. Of note is the fact the SAVE passed out of the House on a 96-3 vote and is now in the Senate. While this is good news, I'll remind everyone this is the exact same position we found ourselves in last year when the bill stalled in the Senate. We are still optimistic this will get done and believe the Senate will take it up next week. However, the REC does meet today and there is no telling what kind of wrinkle this may throw into things. Stay tuned!

I look forward to seeing you at the board meeting Monday night. While the agenda looks lengthy, it really shouldn't be too bad. The longest portion of the agenda will be the budget presentation. I anticipate the meeting to be relatively straightforward, permitting you to get on with any spring break plans you might have relatively quickly.
