Friday Board Bulletin 10/11/2019

Board Members:

We have spent the last two weeks reconciling our enrollment data and believe we are very close. I think most people are very surprised to learn that counting the kids in a school district is not as simply as merely counting heads! The state has had numerous issues with a new data collection  process that has made it very challenging. That said, a big shout out needs to go to both Kevin Murray and Sheila Petry for their very hard work and diligence through the process. Certification is on Tuesday and we'll be ready!

Monday evening I was invited to be a guest lecturer at UNI where I spoke to a group of graduate students studying to be school counselors. Anytime I can take the opportunity to showcase the work we do in Hudson and our outstanding school district, I'm all in! Wednesday afternoon we had both our Phase III construction meeting and labor management committee. Both meetings went well and you can read more about these updates in the board agenda. You'll also be able to see my updates from a discussion we had with Fisher Tracks this morning in that agenda. A big thank you to Director Sallee for making time in his very busy schedule to be here for that meeting. He had to shuffle a few things around in his schedule be here, and for those efforts I'm grateful. Again, you can see those updates in your agenda.

A true highlight of my week though was hosting Dr. Roark Horn for a visit yesterday morning. For those of you that don't know, Roark was my predecessor here at Hudson, serving as superintendent from 2007-2010. Following his appointment here, he moved to the AEA where he served as Chief Administrator of Central Rivers. He is now the Executive Director of School Administrators of Iowa, where he provides leadership and advocacy all around the state. As a former district leader here, Dr. Horn has a soft spot for Hudson. He has been observing us from afar for several years now and was eager to see some the progress we have been making on Phase III. I explained to him that although he has been gone for quite some time, his leadership and some of the decisions made during his tenure have lived on and really helped in the formation of the project we are working on now.

Kindergarten getting ready for the jogathon

The photo I'm sharing this week is from our jogathon, which was held on Wednesday. Originally scheduled for last week and postponed due to rainy weather, the day turned out to be about perfect! Here are the kindergartners receiving directions before beginning.

Finally, congratulations to our volleyball team on a great win last night! If you are coming out to the football game this evening I'll encourage you to dress warm. It is cold right now, and the wind is expected to pick up as the day goes on. Have an awesome weekend!

Dr. Tony Voss, Superintendent
