Friday Board Bulletin 1/10/2020

Board Members:

We come to the end of a very busy and very productive week. It also just happens to be on the eve of our first significant winter weather event of the year. While everyone has been celebrating the fact so far we have had a mild bout of winter, I reminded everyone that we didn't have our first weather related school event until January 15th of last year! So let's not get too excited!!

On Monday I had the opportunity to observe Mrs. Christopher's math class. We have been in the process of discerning a new math program beginning next year and Mrs. Christopher has been piloting it with her classes. While the program performed as I had anticipated, more impressive was the quality of instruction Mrs. Christopher was delivering in her room! You'll get a chance to hear more about this program at our January meeting since it is on the agenda for possible adoption.

Regional superintendents met with Hawkeye Community College on Wednesday, which is something we do annually. They have applied for another grant to provide CNA courses to high school students again this year at no cost, so hopefully they will get it. You may recall we had a couple of students take advantage of this last summer. I'm sure we would have some interest again this summer.

This afternoon I attended our NICL conference superintendent meeting, which went quite a bit longer than normal. One of the items we continue to discuss is conference expansion and the addition of another district. There are a lot of very strong feelings about this move (even among yours truly) so it was an interesting meeting.

Finally this week I asked our bus drivers to conduct an evacuation drill of their students and to exercise all the emergency exits on the units. This is something that will be expanded on in the coming years and comes as a result of recommendations from the NTSB after the investigation into the Riverside incident.

That is all for now. All our activities are going to be cancelled after 6:00 p.m. tonight and the buildings will be closed tomorrow. Have nice relaxing weekend and enjoy the snow!

Dr. Tony Voss, Superintendent
