Friday Board Bulletin 1/24/2020

Board Members:

It was so nice to see everyone at the meeting Monday night! With the holiday break it seemed like it was longer than it actually was! That said, thank you for your hard work! We have already set the wheels in motion for the new math curriculum that you adopted.

We also spent part of our time this week reviewing our administration processes for the ISASP test that we will be taking again this spring. The state has added a few more wrinkles into the equation that we are working through right now. On Wednesday afternoon I had a meeting with our architect and interior designer to start selecting furniture for the new addition. It sure is exciting to continue watching the progress in this space. Then yesterday afternoon we met with model teachers to get input into any changes we may like to make with our teacher leadership plan. It was great to hear from this group and learn more about the support they are providing for professional development implementation and to the teachers at their respective grade levels.

Interspersed among all of that was a constant eye on the weather! Luckily we have been able to hold everything together and get a full week of classes in; many schools around us have not been quite so lucky. I can't really remember a week where I have had to get up early to check roads every day (with the exception of Monday maybe?) and not had to cancel or delay school. What has made today a bit more nerve racking is that Hudson appears to be the western firebreak! It's tough when schools to the south and east have canceled and we are still going strong!

With the holiday on Monday, the legislature had a shortened week, only being in session from Tuesday through Thursday (legislators are off on Fridays so they can be at home in their districts). While it was a jam-packed week of legislative proposals, there wasn't a lot in terms of education related issues. I understand there was quite a bit of back and forth between the chambers in regard to appropriations. We believe that is likely because of negotiations about SSA. We anticipate hearing some numbers about this sometime next week.

Regarding the next two board meetings: we will proceed as scheduled for February 17th. It sounds like everyone will either be able to attend, or attend electronically. The March meeting is a bit trickier since it occurs over spring break and only one is available. I'll send out something about making a change to that meeting date shorty.

UNI pep band with Hudson pep band

The photo I am sharing with you today is from the basketball game on Monday evening. Mrs. Davis was able to arrange for members of the UNI pep band to join our pep band. Not only did they sound amazing, it gave our students an opportunity to perform with high caliber musicians and see they can continue to play beyond high school.

Have a great weekend!
