Friday Board Bulletin 5/14/2021

Board Members:

This time of year! It is both exciting and extremely busy as we attempt to get everything wrapped up. In all, it has been a year that has far exceeded my expectations. A lot of that is due in part to the leadership you all have provided during this most abnormal of school years!

On Monday we were able to get our new LED sign started up and it is now running. We are getting used to the software now and so far we think its' great. A huge thank you to our donors who made this project possible.

We have also spent quite a bit of time interviewing candidates for our instrumental music position and hope to have that wrapped up in time for our board meeting next week. Our sights will now turn to a late kindergarten resignation that we hope to begin interviews for later on next week.

The most exciting news of the week was the state qualifying track meet, which we hosted last night. Congratulations to the following students who were automatic qualifiers:

  • Addison Grady: 1,500 and 3,000
  • Kylee Sallee: Long Jump
  • Trey Jochumsen: 400 Low Hurdles
  • Ben Kelly: 800
  • Boys 4 X 800

Here is the weekly COVID update. I am in discussions with Black Hawk County right now to offer a vaccination clinic for students beginning sometime in June, but we are currently in the preliminary stages right now. As you have probably heard, the CDC has relaxed mask guidelines for those who hav been vaccinated. Since the vast majority of our students have not been vaccinated I would suggest we stay the course with only 10 days of school remaining, keeping in mind quarantine guidelines have not changed.

Unfortunately the legislative session continues. The week began with the chambers still struggling to come to an agreement on the budget, and ended the same way. The House did not meet at all on Monday, while the Senate simply gaveled in and out without any floor work. Both chambers simply gaveled in and out each day the rest of the week and did not hold any debate sessions. Obviously the budget work/negotiations are occurring behind closed doors. It’s expected that they’ll be back in session next week to deal with their differences on the appropriation bills, and possibly to address some policy bills still outstanding. On Monday the governor signed the bill banning schools from having diversity plans. We are already received inquiries from Waterloo regarding open enrollment and will take action on some of those open enrollment applications next week.

Have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you at our meeting on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.!

Dr. Tony Voss, Superintendent
