Friday Board Bulletin 4/19/18

Board Members:

Thank you for your work on Monday evening. I continue to be impressed with your thoughtful dialogue and informative questions. It is very apparent to me that you come to our meetings well prepared!

As I mentioned in a previous communication, the late snow day on Wednesday really put the end of the school year in flux. With our Pirate Term preparation well underway, adding one more day to the calendar really would throw a great deal of planning off for our teachers. My recommendation then is to end the school year for students on June 1 at 1:40 as has been previously communicated with our students and families. On Monday, June 4th we will have teachers report for a day of professional development and then allow them to check out on June 5th beginning at noon. At this point after accounting for all our late starts, we still have a balance of 13.3 hours extra built in. This is exactly the circumstance we have this kind of overage for, so it makes a lot of sense to use this. You will note this has been added as a consent item to our May agenda.

At this point, let’s just hope the legislative session ends before school does! The last day of the session was scheduled for Tuesday, April 17th; but that didn’t happen. In fact there was very little in the way of Chamber work this week. We are being told that a lot of work is happening behind the scenes to get a tax reform bill completed. Once that is done, we believe the budget piece will fall into place very quickly. I am still hopeful there is energy to get the SAVE extension and operational sharing incentive passed. But we’ll have to wait and see.

Next week I am planning to be off on vacation. Because of this, there will not be a Friday bulletin on April 27th. However, as is always the case, I’ll be checking email regularly and will only be a phone call away. We’re headed south, and rumor is that it really is spring there.
