Friday Board Bulletin 2/10/2023

Board Members:

We've had a great week in the district and have several accomplishments to show for our hard work. First, on Monday I spent time working on the TAG plan with Mrs. Angove and our representative from the AEA. I am very excited about the progress we are making with regard to TAG programming for next year and it is evident we have commitment for this work in our district.

Hiring season is upon us, and we are doing a good job of 'keeping our head above water' for right now. The good news is that we have made some key hires for next year and have some interviews scheduled for others next week. The not so good news is that we continue to experience turnover for a variety of reasons as is the norm this time of year. Our principal position closes over the weekend, and it looks like we are going to settle in at around 32 applicants.

Our meeting Wednesday evening was well attended and our plans for the high school renovation and building project were well received. Although I think the best reaction we got was when we previewed the work with the high school girls basketball team!

We have a number of important items on the agenda for next week, including some key decisions on the high school renovation and financing options. Our architect and CM will be in attendance to answer any questions that you might have, so this should be a relatively straightforward conversation. Mr. Bell will also be in attendance to share with you updates to our emergency operations manual and crisis plan. He has been asked to discuss with you the interplay between these documents and the primary takeaway for the board. In our reports section we'll be talking about the FY 2024 budget, a discussion on discretionary transportation, and a review of our public relations contract. Those are included as items 6.1b and 6.2c for your reference.

It was another very busy week at the state capitol! The biggest news of the week coming when the legislature approved and the governor signed the SSA increase at 3%. This is the first time in 14 years they have met the statutory deadline when setting SSA. Speaking of the legislative session, there has not been a lot of positive news so far this session. However, it does seem they are beginning to settle in to more of a routine manner of conducting business. Rather than cover everything this week ad nauseam, I am including a brief video from our lobbyist at the capitol in her weekly 'Under the Golden Dome' podcast. It only runs about 5 minutes so is well worth your time.
