Friday Board Bulletin 4/21/2023

Board Members:

Thank you for all your work on Wednesday evening! I understand the meeting went well and there were many important decisions made. Your efforts are certainly appreciated and noticed! At Ann's appointment on Wednesday we learned she is not in remission. This was not the news that we hoped to hear, but at the same time the doctor continued to be optimistic. Multiple treatment options were discussed and there is a pathway forward. She will begin her second round of chemo treatments daily next week on an outpatient basis. These treatments will occur over the next week and a half in Iowa City. While we will be making daily trips to Iowa City, the good news is that she will be able to be home. My work schedule will be reflective of these appointments.

In the legislature this week, there were two pretty large and impactful bills that were approved and sent off to the governor for signature, which we anticipate will be signed. The first was SF 496 which is the governor's omnibus/transparency bill. The second important bill on its way to the governor is SF 391, the Chapter 12 bill. To remind you, Chapter 12 is the section of Iowa Code that relates to school accreditation (what courses need to be taught, by whom; etc.). We're working with our advocacy groups to provide a summary of everything that is included in both bills, so please stay tuned. In addition to what was described above related to SF 391, SF 496 deals with instruction related to gender identity and sexual orientation, books in schools and library programs among other provisions.

That's all for now. Have a good weekend.
