Friday Board Bulletin 9/29/2023

Board Members:

I hope you all had a great week. We had a couple of pretty substantial projects that we can check off the list after this week. First, we met with our special education team to update our 'District Developed Service Delivery Plan'. This is the document that outlines our continuum of services as it relates to the delivery of special education programs in the district; and how and where those services may be delivered. We also spent some time evaluating how we determine caseloads and a formalized process of resolving caseload disputes. This is a process we need to undertake every 5 years, and it is great to have the heavy lifting done! Now, the plan has been submitted to the AEA for approval and it is open for public comment through October 31. The final plan will be presented to the board for approval on November 15.

Yesterday we had our semi-annual bus inspection. We had a couple of minor issues that took 2 buses out of service, one of which was back in service in time for the afternoon route. We also had a van that had a blinker light out; which we were also able to get that one back into service that same day. A few other items that we have are what are known as '30 day' fixes; in other words they are still in service but we have to get these items rectified within 30 days. In the final analysis though, the inspection went very well!

If you haven't had a chance to drive by the high school lately, it is worth the trip. The masons have been hard at work and the shell of the safe room is up. They have now started on the south wall of the gym and are staging for the north wall of the CTE center. When I was out there this morning it looked like they were getting ready to dig the final footings yet this afternoon. Progress is slow, but we are seeing progress!

I am excited to announce that last night I was informed that we had been awarded a school safety grant for $100,000 from the Iowa Department of Homeland Security. The proceeds from this grant will be used to upgrade our security cameras and I anticipate the RFP being sent out today to begin the bid solicitation process.

That is all for now. If Ann is feeling up to it, we are going to be out of town Wednesday through Friday next week for a bit of a 'mini' vacation. With that, there won't be a bulletin next Friday. As always, keep in mind that I can always be reached by cell or email. Have a great weekend!
