Friday Board Bulletin 1/12/2024

Board Members:

Last night at the basketball game I was talking to a couple of high school girls that were really excited that we weren't having school today. I couldn't understand it, because we've only had two days of school this week! The joys of an unplanned day off, I guess! I've got everyone (me included) working from home today. Later on this afternoon I may try and venture over to the office, but it doesn't seem real necessary at this point. The weather has disrupted our construction project this week, although I understand they are ready to start installing the steel over the CTE building--the crane was delivered earlier this week. We have a roof on the gym and it is sealed up so they will start heating that space next week so work can continue indoors.

The legislature began their session this past Monday with the highlight being Governor Reynolds Condition of the State Address. Among her proposals were the following education related policies:

Major Reforms of the AEA System:
Eliminating the flow-through funding process and allowing school districts to retain the revenues generated for special education services. School districts will have the ability to use these funds to contract for special education services with the AEAs or other organizations. This will likely lead to the collapse of the AEA system.

SSA: 2.5% increase: This is about what I expected and have in our budget forecast. For Hudson, that would equate to $224,054 in regular program growth.

Increasing Minimum Salary Levels: The governor recommended increasing the Teacher Salary Supplement (TSS) provision by $96.1 million to pay for increasing the minimum salary levels to $50,000 for all teachers and to $62,000 for teachers with at least 12 years of experience. This provision would go into effect in FY 2025 and then grow each year based on the SSA state percent of growth rate.

There are more proposals, but these are among the most signficant in my view. The distance from proposal to enactment is quite a journey so we'll need to keep all that in mind over the coming months.

Finally, just a quick reminder that we have a board meeting scheduled for Wednesday. All of the material is available in the shared google folder and hopefully will be easier for you to view and manage. If you have any issues at all, please let me know.

Have a great weekend, stay indoors and stay safe!
