Friday Board Bulletin 3/5/2021

Board Members:

I hope you have all had a great week! Today marks an important milestone in the normal rhythm of the school year: the end of the third quarter. In addition to that, one year ago this week we began this long COVID journey. You can read about my reflections on this last year and all that has transpired in this week's edition of my blog. We have come a very long way in this past year! Here is today's weekly COVID update.

Speaking of milestones, today also marks the first funnel deadline in the state legislature. In order for a bill to remain 'alive' for consideration, it must have passed through the standing committee in the chamber of origin. That made this a very busy week with regard to preparing bills for this deadline. Fortunately, a lot of bad ideas met their demise today: one of which being the voucher bill. However, the charter bill remains alive for consideration and some of these onerous bills can be revived if attached as an amendment to another piece of legislation. Bottom line is that it isn't over until it's over!

Two weeks ago I sent the first of a three part mini-series presented by the 'Schools Cannot Do it Alone' network titled The Eve-Increasing Burden on America's Public Schools: 120 years of mandates. Today's 3:45 minute second installment chronicles the growth of mandates from 1960-2000. Here is the direct link. I encourage you to watch it and, if you approve share it widely with the people in your social networks.

One rather mundane evolution this week included or bi-annual bus inspection, which was yesterday. While it is typical for buses to have items that need to be addressed in the immediate short term, none of our buses were placed out of service. A good inspection overall!

That is all for now. Have a great weekend and I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy this warm weather!
